BT recently announced that they plan yet another price hike. For small businesses trying to absorb these additional costs can be challenging. How to change phone and broadband provider?
If you haven’t completed the minimum term of your contract before cancelling your hands aren’t completely tied. Although BT is likely to impose a fine, your future savings from using a different provider may well justify paying it.
The majority of providers, like BT, use the Openreach telecoms network, meaning that you will be able to change your broadband and phoneline for free. All you need to do is pick your provider, get in touch with them and they will cancel your current contract on your behalf.

BT will offer 30 days of leverage, in which the customer has time to switch contracts without any cancellation fees. Even if you miss the 30-day leeway, you only amount cancellation fees of £8.50 for every month left within the contract. Obviously, its preferable to avoid these charges but its likely still cheaper to change provider.
The BT Package and cancellation
You’re probably tied in to a 12 or 24-month contract if you’re with BT, so check carefully before cancelling. Unfortunately, you can’t find out how long left you have on your contract online and instead you would need to contact them by telephone on 0800 345 7310. For those of us who don’t have the patience to be on hold for hours at a time you can write them a letter declaring your intention to cancel your contract with them.
